He also won 14 races in the NASCAR Cup Series, including the Charlotte 600 in 1968, 1969, and 1970 and the World 600 in 1972.

Yarbrough began his career in the NASCAR Grand National (now Cup) Series in 1960 and raced for various teams until he joined Junior Johnson's team in 1967. It was with Johnson that Yarbrough had his most successful years, winning many races and finishing second in the 1969 championship points standings, behind David Pearson. He retired from racing after the 1972 season due to personal reasons.

Yarbrough was inducted into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in 1993 and the National Motorsports Press Association Hall of Fame in 2005. He died in 1984 at the age of 46 from complications of a head injury he suffered in a boating accident.
